Mount Kailash & Mansarovar Yatra

Introduction

The Tibetan Plateau’s western section contains the holy Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar. It is located in the Himalayas’ northernmost section. Mount Kailash, also known as Mount Meru and Kang Rinpoche, or snow gem, is a 6714m high summit.
It has been one of the holiest destinations for most religions, including Buddhists, Hindus, Jains, and Bonpos, for thousands of years. Hindus walk a ‘Parikrama’ or pilgrimage to Kailash Mansarovar during the Kailash Mansarovar yatra. It is approximately 32 miles around Mount Kailash’s circle. It is thought that it cleanses the soul of all sins.
People believe that Lord Shiva dwelled in meditation on its top. As per the Legend in the Hindu religion, the lake was first created in the mind of the Lord Brahma. Hence, in Sanskrit, it is Mansarovar, a combination of Manas (sense) and Sarovar (lake). Many pilgrims visit the place with full devotion in Kailash Mansarovar yatra.
Similarly, both the names Kang (Kailash) and Mapum (Manasarovar) hold special religious significance among the followers of Bon, Tibetan Buddhism, Hinduism, and Jainism. For Bon followers, Kang Rinpoche is a pillar of the universe and a sacred place where Guru Rinpoche is said to have attained enlightenment. Buddhists believe Kang Rinpoche as the meditating seat of Buddha. Likewise, Hindus consider Kailash as the abode of Lord Shiva and his consort Parvati while Jain believe their first saint, Rishabhanath, achieved liberation/freedom after meditating atop the mountain.

What is the significance of Kailash Yatra ?

Kailash and Mansarovar hold a significant place in the spiritual and natural realms due to their association with the origin of water and their profound religious significance. This enchanting and mystical location has captivated individuals for various reasons. Exploring the sacred journey to these pristine snowy wonders, Mount Kailash and the revered Mansarovar Lake, is highly recommended. Mount Kailash is traditionally considered the Axis Mundi, symbolizing the cosmic center of the world, where the celestial and terrestrial realms converge. It is believed to be the sacred point where heaven and earth meet. The spiritual importance of Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar, including the revered Mansarovar Lake, has been deeply ingrained in the human imagination since ancient times. According to Hindu legends and Puranas, the genesis of the lake can be traced back to the contemplation of Lord Brahma, the creator. The name “Manasarovar” in Sanskrit is derived from ‘Manas’ (mind) and ‘Sarovar’ (lake), reflecting its divine origin in the mind of the deity. Additionally, in Hindu beliefs, Mount Kailash is regarded as the divine abode of Lord Shiva, representing the sacred center of the Earth and a manifestation of heavenly realms.
Tibetan Buddhists identify Kailash as the abode of the Buddha Demchok, symbolizing supreme harmony. The Tibetan ‘Bon Po’ religion views Mount Kailash as its spiritual seat of power. In Jainism, Kailash is known as Mount Ashtapada, where eight rishis meditated, and where the faith’s creator, Rishabhadeva, attained liberation from the cycle of life and rebirth. Located just 21 kilometers from Mount Kailash, the Manasarovar Lake, nestled in front of Mt. Gorla Mandata, is renowned for its purity, healing properties, and the ability to absolve mortal sins. Drinking the holy water is believed to grant instant recognition of “Shivalok,” and according to the Ramayana, those who circumambulate and bathe in the lake will directly reach heaven upon death. The Kailash Manasarovar yatra offers an intense spiritual journey, featuring meditation sessions, Sathsangs (spiritual discourses), and more. The pilgrimage includes a visit to the breathtaking Manasarovar Lake, followed by a challenging yet fulfilling trek to the North face of Kailash, allowing for meditation in the presence of the mighty peak. This expedition is both demanding and rewarding, resulting in a transformative and enlightening experience that defies description. Prepare for extraordinary encounters – from cliff-top monasteries and yak caravans traversing snowy passes to the majestic Himalayan peaks. Above all, be ready for profound self-reflection and spiritual insight. As the legend goes, you return home with “a little bit of Kailash in your heart and mind.” Our team of skilled local Nepalese, along with trained teachers and volunteers, is committed to assisting you at every step of this unforgettable journey. The Kailash Manasarovar parikrama, spanning 52km, will be open between the end of May and the end of September, with dates available for 2024.

Due to its high religious significance, Mt. Kailash has always remained an unclimbed mountain till now. The mountain is sacred to the Hindus, Buddhists, Bons, and Jains. According to the Hindu mythology, the mountain has been regarded as the abode of Lord Shiva. Many attempts have been made in the past to get to the summit, but none succeeded due to extreme weather conditions the moment they set foot on the mountain. Although the Chinese government, during the mid-80s, offered Reinhold Messner, the Italian alpinist authorization to climb Mt. Kailash, he simply declined the offer after protest from mountaineers around the world. The Chinese government then got the message and banned any future climbing attempts. There isn’t much information, but it is believed that the only person to reach the summit was the Tibetan Buddhist yogi, Milarepa in the 11th century.

This place is also known as Yam Dwar. Getting off from the bus at Yam Dwar, all the pilgrims provide offering to Lord Shiva.

Then, we move round the Yam Dwar for three times. According to Hindu religion, this place is known as the Gate of the God of Death (Yam Dwar). Yam Dwar is built in the shape of a temple. Inside there are 3 bells hanging and are called Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshwar. In this temple, we make 3 circuits, then enter inside of door, ring the bell and get out and continue walking or riding pony to Dirapuk on the first day of Parikrama. (Journey on foot begins from Yam Dwar) Physically disabled pilgrims distantly pay homage to Kailash Parbat and return to Darchen because the visit of Yam Dwar is believed to get equally religious gain as they do for Kailash Parbat itself. This path/trail is somehow busy with pilgrims, horses, local porters, yaks, and Nepali workers.

After 3 hours long walking along the riverside path we stop for our lunch sport. Kailash Parbat can be seen clearly from here. Below the Parbat we can see a big stone in the shape of an elephant. It is believed that God Indra rides on it. After a 2-hour long walk, we can reach Dirapuk. There is a Dirapuk Monastery situated on the edge of Lha Chhu River. The name of this place is given from the name of Monastery itself. This Monastery is located at a height of 4900m. above sea level. The scene of Kailash from here is like heaven. Hundreds of pilgrims arrive at Dirapuk from Yam Dwar riding on the horse or on their foot every day.

Here, some Yatri prefer to take pony & local porter for the 3 days. (If you would like to take pony and porter, you should tell the Tibetan guide in advance for arrangement.) On this day, you have to walk continuously for about 5 to 6 hours. Yaks will carry all our goods and equipment and your bags. From Dirapuk, you can see north face of Mt. Kailash very closed, overnight stay at Dirapuk mud house/ guesthouse. <br>

Yatri’s report feeling like and believe that they have been blessed by Lord Shiva by touching the base of Kailash Mountain. Pilgrims offer Pooja and seek blessings from lord Shiva. While returning back, takes around one and half hour to 2 hours and it is day tour / Yatra from Dirapuk.

Day 12

Altitude: 4790 m. Walking from Dirapuk to Zuthulpuk (4790 meters - 21 kilometers). This is an important day as we have to cross the pass called Dolma La or Dorma La Pass, which is 5636 meters above sea level. Weather here is unpredictable with imminent snowstorm so it's important to start our journey as early as possible. When we come down about 10 minutes from Dolma La pass, on the right-hand side you can see a holy lake called PARVATI KUND, we need to go steep down till Shapje Datok and then onto Zuthulpuk monastery. Again, our night stay will be at a mud house or guest house.

Many of them bring holy water from the Kund to their home.

Recommendations for Kailash Yatra

Prior to the trip:

You must engage in trekking or hiking before your Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. You can follow the guided itinerary for the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra tour.  It is crucial if you plan on performing the “parikrama” of Mount Kailash Mansarovar yatra. Walk at least 4 to 5 km daily to get your body used to the activity. If you don’t have an active lifestyle, it makes you hard. Make it; start by walking a few kilometers daily, then aim to increase that amount as much as possible.

Try to step up your workout routine by step and start jogging if you’re capable of already walking a few kilometers each day. Despite what it may look like at first, jogging is not challenging. Jogging is a terrific way to raise your body’s fitness level and will expand your lung capacity. This will help you with your Kailash Mansarovar yatra.

You can begin your workout by walking up the stairs. You need to climb the steps as much as you can. Both the home and the office would enjoy this. As often as you can, choose the stairs instead of the elevator. Walking up and down the stairs is preferable to joining a gym or purchasing a treadmill.

Before embarking on the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, you don’t need to join a gym and bulk up. It is enough to enroll in an aerobics class nearby. Even better, join a group of neighbors who share your interests and practice aerobics.

You can find inspiration by watching videos on YouTube. Examinations of health:  before joining Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. It is essential to visit the doctor and discuss your trip plans.
